Hey folks, Today I am going to share some tips that I have explored and observed for getting photos explored on flirkr.com.
First, lemme tell you about Explore. Flickr maintains a continuously updating database of Top 500 Photographs uploaded at the latest. These Top 500 Photos are selected automatically based on Flickr’s Unknown Algorithm. Albeit, that was past tense, a lot can be determined these days.
Below are a few tips that could help you get your photos explored.
Things to be done BEFORE Flickr
- A Unique Photo: More than 1 Million Photos are added on Flickr Daily, What is it that you add makes a difference? Is it The Post Processing Or The Composition What? Well the answer is simple, what ever you click – if it speaks without any title and tags – its gotta be a gem! The clue here is simple, a photograph that itself forces the user to view or think on it more than twice is – the one!
- Photo File Name: Please do not upload your picture with a File Name as DSC, Image001 etc. Please rename the file before uploading to the title you wish to give to the photo or with the tags you are keen to add to the uploaded to the photo. Avoid using an special characters in the file name and keep plain in alphabets
- Watermark: There are a lot of thieves stalking Flickr for photos, just make sure you copyright you work with a good watermark or upload a low resolution and small size image keeping your Flickr Privacy Settings Proper to avoid any such thing.
Things to be done ON Flickr
- A Good Title: Give you picture a great title related to the picture composition. Eg. For a picture of an Indian Shepard living in Maharashtra – a title “People of India” would be just awesome instead of “A Shepard” or “Amazing Scenery” or “… a random thought on people…“. Why I project his is because good titles have great related tags associated to them. A good title gives you an ability to put amazingly awesome and search oriented tags that would eventually bring more and more traffic to your photo from Yahoo, Flickr and Google search.
- Great Tags: As discussed above add great tags to your photos. Eg. To the photo above “People of India” you can use the below tags
people of india, people of indian origin, people of india project, people of indian states, people of india series, people of india wikipedia, people of indian origin card, people of india pictures, people of india anthropological survey of india, people of india wiki, people of indian descent, people of india are called, people of india pictures
Now these tags are made from the top search queries on flickr, google and yahoo. Search these engines for phrase “People of India” and determine these tags from the titles of first page results. Also you can use the Google Keyword Research Tool for the same.
- Description: Give a great Description to your photo, get users involved and prompt them to share their thoughts on the photo. A description should be emotional, any perspective could work relating to the composition of the picture.
- Groups: Now, since you have uploaded the photo, add it to the various Flickr Groups to share it with people. Add only to 4-5 related groups (Alert – Adding to more and more groups would restrict your photo to get explored. Keep at max. 5 Groups), Eg. “People of India” photo must be added to the related groups Eg. India or People of India etc.
- Comments and Favs: Now, albeit its not exactly clear that on how many Favs and Comments does a Photo get explored but its obvious that Favs are weighted more to Comments. All round the explore probability is dependent on Favs > Comments > Views.
- Tit for Tat: Well, if you dont give comments and add favs ya ain’t getting anything back. Comment on at least 20-30 pictures of your contacts daily, Add 10-15 Favs (keep them exclusive, don’t add any good-to-go photo as a fav) and regularly make new friends. You can customize your activity and be more active – easily
This is all I can say till now, let me know what you think – I will add more tips as I explore them. Happy Clicking!

Thanks for your tips! I have the fortunate opportunity to be teaching in Uruguay, S. America and have taken thousands of pix! The world has become new to me through my humble Canon IS.
Question:
1) I notice I take more fotos of objects, lines, and animals. I feel, at times, like it is an invasion of soul/privacy to take of people. Any advice on how to overcome this barrier? I would like to have more fotos of people and their projected emotions.
Thanx for any insights you might share. I really enjoy your work and find it inspiring for my visions of future “insights!”
Mike
Hello Mike
Its nothing like an invasion, just relax and take permission before taking a snap and convey why you were taking that photo, that should do it!
